Wargaming is the structured use of conflict simulations, on a map, tabletop, or computer, to explore 'what if' questions about military operations. Since the 17th century, they've been used to plan out military strategy.

The modern iteration of wargames were developed by the US Naval War College in the 1880s, to explore fleet engagement, and were used to prep for the Pacific Theatre Operations in the second world war.
